Thiruthangal, a Municipality Township in Virudhunagar District is located 62 kilometres south of Madurai, very close to Sivakasi, a town well known for safety matches, fire works and printing units. On top of a small hill in Thiruthangal, there are three temples one for Lord Shiva and two other for Lord Muruga and Lord Vishnu. Vishnu is known here as Thirunindra Narayana Perumal and the Goddess as Sengamala Nachiar.

This Vaishnavite temple, constructed in 994 A.D. by a native of Thiruthangal, who served as an important Minister to the then Pandya King is one among the 108 Sacred places of worship for the vaishnavites. The village had once flourished in agriculture. Later on, the scanty rains in the area and the poor returns from agriculture made the people migrate to urban centres to earn their livelihood, by trade and business. At present, due to the proximity of Sivakasi, Thiruthangal has been witnessing a rapid growth of lucrative business like fire works, match works, printing and other industries.
